2. Oil seal structure and functions


Purpose of an Oil Seal
Oil seals are made out of nitrile synthetic rubber with steel stiffener rings. Other rubbers such as viton, silicon, neoprene or poly acrylic can be used for specific applications. The stiffener rings may be stainless steel or brass where highly corrosive fluids are to be sealed. Springs are generally made of spring steel to IS: 4454:Gr.ll or from stainless steel or bronze for corrosion resistance
The simplest way is to know either the preferred manufacturers part number, the overall sizes of shaft diameter, housing diameter and bore depth, or use our brochure to establish the M Barnwell Services ordering reference. Many of the old traditional names of seal manufacturers have either changed or disappeared in this age of “acquisitions”. If no longer available, we will advise you and offer a suitable alternative seal, from stock whenever possible. If your concern is getting the right seals for the job, you will need to know something about the application as well as the overall sizes. What materials are available?
When you start the actual installation make sure that the oil seal is always facing the right direction. So, not facing outwards, but always with the spring facing the side of the medium to be sealed. The oil seal must then be pressed into the bore. Use appropriate tools, such as a bearing fitting tool set, to ensure that this is done evenly. The oil seal must never be forcefully hammered into the bore.

Scrape off all the traces of dirt and old gasket from the engine and sump flanges with a paint scraper.
