There are a variety of oil seals used in a variety of applications to help close the space between a stationary and a moving part. By closing the space it prevents any lubricants from escaping. Additionally, oil seals help create a seal that prevents any contaminants from entering machinery which can cause a host of problems. Mechanical equipment and machinery require different size or type oil seals to ensure that there is a superior and precise seal. Because oil seals help reduce contamination or mixing of materials it prolongs the life of machinery and helps ensure a more reliable performance.

Carefully lift off the cover. If it sticks, gently tap it sideways with a soft-faced rawhide or nylon hammer, or with the heel of your hand.
Over time, the seal lip(s) will wear a shallow groove into the shafting due to the pressure the seal imposes upon it. Visible scoring on the shaft indicates a genuine possibility that the seal will not perform as well as intended. From this kind of standard immersion testing, one would expect that bisphenol-cured VDF/HFP/TFE fluoroelastomers would not give good service life as oil seals. Similar tests with other elastomers, such as HNBR, silicone, and acrylic rubbers, show less loss of elongation. However, it is found that, in actual service, FKM shaft seals6 have much longer service life than seals of the other elastomers. In a Japanese study of FKM lip seals, rear crankshaft seals from high-mileage automobiles (70,000–280,000 mi ie, 110,000–450,000 km) were collected and examined. No serious oil leakage was found when the seals were removed from the engines. Some deposits were found around the seal lip and on the garter spring holding the lip against the shaft. No surface cracks were found on the seal lip, and only minor crazing on the crankcase side of the flexure portion of the seal in some samples. The seal compositions were not noted, but most were probably VDF/HFP/TFE elastomers with 68–69% fluorine content.
If you use accessories such as installation tools or grease containers, it is just as important to ensure they are taken care of. A good practice is to cover grease containers with a sealable lid when not in use. In doing so, you reduce the risk of dirt contaminating the grease and, subsequently, your oil seal.
